The flavor is rich and complex, sometimes a little unpleasant because of the bitterness of the cacao, and sometimes sweet enough to make your teeth tingle. But the overall flavor is both absolutely delicious and over with far too soon. On the surface, the show's "premise" seems a bit contrived. Both of our stars, Hanabi and Mugi, have fallen in love with one of their teachers. Hanabi is in love with Narumi, a straight-laced dork who grew up living nearby and eventually gained the affectionate nickname 'onii-chan'. Mugi is in love with Akane, who was his tutor for a time. Neither Hanabi nor Mugi are brave enough to confess their love for fear that their feelings are unrequited. Recognizing each other's fear, the two make an agreement. They'll pretend to be a dating couple and provide moral support to each other until they one day muster the courage and, hopefully, find their love for their teachers to be requited after all. The "story" that takes place has little to do with the "premise". The premise is solidly intertwined with the plot, but this show's "story" is about the adolescent journey of trying to figure out their emotions, coming to terms with the absurdity of their situation, and finally, well, the show does eventually makes Kuzu no Honkai or "Scum's Wish" such a brilliantly conceived and carried-through show is, first and foremost, the vision of the mangaka, who created a story that could be translated almost verbatim into animation. Also, credit goes to both excellent artistic direction and acting. From the artistic style to scene transitions to tempo in monologue-driven story progression, all the way to the interaction between characters and the absolutely delicious sensuality between the characters... Even this show's weakest points, of which there are a few, are boldly steamrolled over by the overall brilliance of the the one real controversy about this show, and what will definitely turn off some viewers, is the Shoujo-style of netorare or 'NTR' that allegedly happens in the show. Personally, I fall firmly on the side of this not actually being NTR since, by definition, it can't be NTR unless the involved parties are actually in a relationship to begin with. That said, it is true that Akane, Mugi's crush, is a villainous character who delights in dating men who are desired by other women... Because it helps her to gauge the 'value' of the man. And, as the story plays out, Akane seems to take particular delight in tormenting those of you who can sit through the angst of a love triangle, however, you'll soon discover that by the time this show is over, you won't feel as if anyone has really 'lost'. As a show about a journey, the story is about the paths taken, not the destination. And in adolescence, that convoluted path rarely takes a person to where they expected to go. You may fall and twist your ankle. Someone may steal your wallet. But eventually, you'll be somewhere, and the experience will have enriched your life, pleasant or not. That's the real beauty in Kuzu no Honkai. Bittersweet chocolate hurts so of Taboo Well, not necessarily taboo, but this show is incredibly sensual and contains a great deal of 'sexual activity' that occurs, for the most part, interrupted before it gets very far, or not going beyond some steamy kissing or clothed-breast fondling before the scene cuts away. Though it should be noted that 'assisted masturbation' does occur, obscured by a blanket. There is also a lesbian sequence that includes veiled but obvious sexual acts. Also, the 'NTR' claims about the show even though it isn't NTR. It's a competitive love triangle and one of the three inevitably of Ecchi Surprisingly little actually shown. Almost everything occurs 'off screen' or beneath covers. However, although we don't see exposed nipples or the like, characters are oftentimes naked or semi-naked in sex-oriented embrace. Sensual romance, absolutely. And as I said above, there is a also concealed assisted masturbation... which doesn't go through the whole process, but there is no doubt what's age group Probably 16+. As I explain above, although this isn't actually pornographic, it's quite heavy on steaminess and sensuality. Also, the plotline is pretty solidly shoujo- girls' romance- and may not be that interesting to some viewers. That said, I'm 35, male, and this is one of the best anime I have seen in & Animation - 8 - One of the most striking things about this show is the quality of the artwork- or the 'artistry'. If you look closely, you'll notice that this show does suffer from the common 'lack of in-between frames' or 'poor framerate' almost all anime suffers from. But the artistic expression makes this one particular failing hard to notice if you aren't actually looking for it. From the actual character design to backgrounds, transition animations, and even cinematography, this show is actually very - 8 - First, both the opening and ending songs for this show are very good and fit extremely well with the ambiance of the show. The background music is also good. I really got the sense that all of the music was inspired by the story instead of being 'commissioned based on the premise'. Background sounds are subtle but realistic enough. Nothing stood out as being 'particularly out of place' in my - 9 - Not to be confused with 'plot', though I'll touch on 'plot' at the same time. Basically, this show's premise sounds pretty weak, and on many occasions, the 'plot' is easy to predict. The show isn't so much about the bullet-list of events from A to Z, but the actual story at and between each bullet point. On that level, this show is excellent. Even scenes that feel a little contrived or 'just too predictable' taste utterly delicious. While watching this show, I frequently felt like 23 minutes passed in 5. I've never seen a show that just flowed so beautifully before- and I've seen 9 - Depending on what you expect here, you may be disappointed or not. The acting in this show is exquisite, particularly Hanabi. All of the characters have a really believable presentation, and with the exception of a few scenes here and there, the delivery absolutely carries the characters through. With that said, all of the primary and secondary cast have their 'moment in the sun', a chance to 'present their story', and a chance to take a swing at their goal. Some of the characters really did stand out more than others. Mugi, for instance, was a little bit weak. Whereas Hanabi was a knockdown smash hit all around. Akane made for a very delicious bitch, while Narumi was so vanilla it was painful- intentionally so. Compared with other anime, the characters in this show- even at their worst- are orders of magnitude more believable than - 10 - The value in this show is both the perfection of template and the drawing of new template. Angsty monologue-driven love stories are by no means rare, and this show very much feels like a 'romance novel'. Sexy, steamy, angsty, and delicious. Frankly speaking, this show is only going to appeal to people who like that sort of thing. It isn't as if this show will appeal to your 'typical shounen action' lover. And since the show is sensual insteady of 'ecchi', people looking for nip-peeks will be sorely disappointed. As a romance, this show was desperately needed because it isn't written with your typical 'shounen' or 'eroge otaku' in mind, and that's where most 'romance' comes from in anime if it isn't blatant template 'shoujo'.Enjoyment - 10 - I absolutely loved this show from beginning to end. I was totally blindsided by it. It sucked me in so thoroughly that 23 minutes passed in what felt like 5 every time. I've never seen another show that could so utterly enthrall and delight me all at once. The angst was very real, but the painful bits rarely stung for long because the show just kept moving right along. Akane's a "delicious bitch", and I hate characters that are mean for the sake of being mean, but I actually found myself liking her. All around, this show to me is just about as close to perfection as you can get. Yeah. I enjoyed - 9 - I consider this show Must See. Some people may be turned off by a competitive love triangle, and some people may find the sequence of plot points a little too over the top, but... I'm not and I don't. Give this show three episodes. If you don't like it, you don't like it. But it definitely deserves a chance.
